In world competitions of FIFA Soccer, the number of seats allocated must comply with a breakdown by area. There are six such zones around the world: UEFA (Europe), the CONCAF (North and Central America), CONMEBOL (South America), CAF (Africa), AFC (Asia), the OFC (Oceania).

The area FCA has 6 seats. One is assigned automatically by the host country and the other 5 are subject to a qualifying campaign. For these places, 53 national teams competed in a first phase.

For the UEFA zone, 13 places were allocated in the 2010 World Cup. Nine teams qualified from the group phase, the remaining 4 seats from being occupied by dams between the top 8 following representative.

The CFA zone has 4.5 seats. This means that after the four qualifying teams, the 5th (Bahrain) will play against a team at the dam area with OFC won the right to participate in the play-off. This is the selection of New Zealand.

CONCAF area, which apart from the Central and North America, also includes the Caribbean, 35 teams fought for the 3.5 spots allocated. The United States, Mexico and Honduras have already qualified. In another highly coveted spot, Costa Rica will have to fight with the selection in Uruguay. The latter belongs to the CONMEBOL zone and finished on 5th place. This position does not guarantee qualification for the 2010 World Cup, but allows a team that failed to qualify after the group stage, to participate, when mixed with the World Cup in South Africa.
